In many cases the use of the terms brain injury and head injury are used interchangeably. However, it is possible for someone to suffer a head injury and not have an injury to the brain.

Head injury is defined as trauma to the head, that may or may not include injury to the brain. This includes injuries to other parts of the head, such as the scalp and skull and may be closed or open.

A brain injury can be called an acquired brain injury, intracranial injury, or simply head injury, and occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. Parts of the brain that can be damaged include the cerebral hemispheres, cerebellum and brain stem.

Common causes of both head injuries and brain injuries include vehicle accidents, home and occupational accidents, falls, and assaults.

In many cases, the services of a traumatic brain injury lawyer or attorney may be necessary to assure those who are at fault are held responsible for compensating the victim. If one needs to hire an attorney or lawyer, finding one with the proper experience is vital.
